New BGOV Postal Contracts Dashboard Details $15B In FY17 Spending

FedEx Corp., U.S. Bank, and EnergyUnited are among the biggest winners in the $15 billion U.S. Postal Service market for fiscal 2017.

That’s according to sales figures in Bloomberg Government’s new USPS spending dashboard, which allows you to analyze contract spending by market classifications, company, and territories. The data show spending totals of about $15 billion for fiscal 2016 and fiscal 2017.

Contracts for the essential elements of mail delivery — surface transportation, air transportation and vehicles — accounted for 51 percent of total annual USPS spending last year. At 21 percent, facilities construction was the fastest-growing market, followed by IT Software Services and Retail Systems at 14 percent. USPS Telecom and IT hardware spending fell 10 percent.

Clients can use the dashboard to perform market research and determine USPS market characteristics, such as:

  • The largest state recipient of USPS contract dollars is Illinois, home to a major USPS operations center in Chicago. USPS contracts in Illinois totaled $1.8 billion in fiscal 2017.
  • The USPS supplier network consists of more than 18,000 reported vendors nationwide and around the world. Excluding FedEx, an average-sized vendor won about $809,000 in fiscal 2017.
  • USPS contracts worth a total of $12.7 billion are scheduled to terminate between now and the end of fiscal 2020.

Uncovering Hidden Dollars

The new dashboard reveals previously undisclosed spending at USPS that is not reported to the federal database known as FPDS-NG. Clients can uncover the market dynamics at USPS through a series of easy to navigate tabs that display selected data by map, chart and table.

For example, you can select a list of IT contracts worth a total of $2 billion that end by the close of 2020. Simply choose the three IT-related Category Management Center categories from the menu and set a Contract End Date Range of March 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2020. All parts of the dashboard automatically re-total and re-display as filter criteria are entered.

USPS is a quasi-government agency that is not subject to the Federal Acquisition Regulation. It supports itself through fees collected for various type of shipping services, which makes it exempt from reporting contract spending to the U.S. General Services Administration. Bloomberg Government obtained USPS spending data directly from the Postal Service.
